our foundation and beginnings

Anikita's Terra Neva Jania, "Tara"

The first dog to carry the Terra Neva name was a bitch acquired from Pat and Bruce Screaton, known as Anikita's Terra Neva Jania, "Tara". It would have been more appropriate to name her "Terror". She taught us all the tricks of the Siberian Husky Trade, good and bad. After we lived through her Siberian "traits" we knew this breed was not for the average person, but suited us just fine.

Tara earned eight Canadian points, with her first three coming at the Canadian Sportsmen Show (seven days of benched shows) where she went Best of Opposite Sex to her father her first time in the ring.

She taught us a thing or two in the whelping box as well. Although she was a Varska daughter out of a Clipper daughter we only bred her twice. The first litter she whelped on the 68th day (talk about a nervous first time). One of her puppies went on to become known as Can. Ch. Terra Neva's Sinderella, "Push", who only needed a major to finish in the States.

We discontinued the Tara lineage for a number of reasons, foremost because of the continued short upper arm, and the tendencies for bad tail sets. Perhaps, in hind sight, we were too quick to "throw the baby out with the dish water", but we as breeders should always use the best of the best we can possibly use in a breeding program and that brings us to Storm and Melba.

Am./Can. Ch. Dudley's Stormie, "Storm" came to us from Clarence ("Dud") and Gladys Dudley and Demavand's Peach Melba was bred by Mike Jennings and Shelia Kanzler. The two produced our first home bred group winning bitch, Am/Can Ch. Terra Neva's Charo, "Charo" (pictured left) As well , her sister, Terra Neva's Tem Pest. (major pointed)

Our first bred by Group Winner Am/Can Ch. Terra Neva's Charo, "Charo" and sister "Pest"

Along with Melba we acquired Demavand's Amorak, "Rocky". He was bred to Terra Neva's Tem Pest, "Pest" (a Storm x Melba daughter) and their children produced dogs that can be found in the pedigrees of Terra Neva dogs today. Denali and Sass are descendents of the Rocky x Pest breeding.

There are many people who have contributed to Terra Neva Siberian Huskies both past and present and we would like to thank them.

Clarence ("Dud") & Gladys Dudley

We miss you dearly and both of you will always be in our hearts. We tried to continue the tradition "Dud", and know you are watching from above.

Peggy Koehler

We are so thankful she was such a true friend and mentor, that had and instilled the purest love for this breed, not only to me but all that she had taken under her wing. And thank you for the genes from the great combination of Nikolai and Oomachuk.

Mike Jennings

Without Melba and Demavand's Amorak (thanks for allowing us to acquire the pair), we wouldn't have the dogs of today.

Kathleen Kanzler

For her wonderful dogs that we have been fortunate enough to be able to breed with, for without them, Terra Neva Siberians that we love and are so proud of wouldn't exist.

And the biggest thank you of all to John and Anne Womack

I started in Am. Cocker Spaniels in 1966, and they are the reason I became involved in Showing Dogs.  Without their help, I would never have stayed in this hobby all these years, certainly not with the commitment it takes to be even half way successful or responsible.

They were the owners of Joann American Cocker Spaniels. They spent countless hours teaching me the "Dog Game", time that they certainly could have devoted to their own four children. Time, that as an adult, I now realize was at a premium, but time they devoted without complaint. They took this time to instill a sense of responsibility to use sound breeding practices, and a great respect and love for this wonderful hobby. For this, I will always be very grateful. So, with love and great affection, I thank them from the very bottom of my heart.

Anne Womack told me, and this has lived with me through the years, "There are many heartbreaks in this endeavor of ours, more than there are glorious victories, and if you can't take the heartbreaks, get out now. But if you are willing to live with the heartbreaks then the rewards are great....and that comes from the love and joys that the dogs themselves give to you."

No truer words have ever been spoken.
